Don't forget that because it isn't an OHC engine it's small enough to be shoved in to everything under the sun.

Less cams= less weight and less stuff to go wrong and can be swapped into more cars, therefore more burnouts. Everyone likes burnouts.

Excellent American engineering: reliable, modifiable, swappable, low cost per HP, can provide good fuel economy, can be worked on by mechanics anywhere, parts are widely available, long life due to it being under-stressed in normal use, pretty smooth due to inherent balance of the design and actually pretty light for the power output. Scoff all you want but there aren't many other production engines that have had such a long design life in their original block, crankcase and valve-train configuration.

No no no, I read! I completely agree with you, they are awesome. I am just pointing out the hoards of people that say they aren't good engine because they have pushrod design. If it is such an archaic design then explain how it came after OHC!! Muahahah

To your point, a friend has one in his (experimental) airplane. One of these days I should do a writeup about that. It wasn't without its (significant) challenges but apparently is now working pretty well. Pretty versatile mill.

Just out of curiosity, has GM ever produced a 4 cylinder that's basically half of an LS series engine?

Of course it gets 30mpg highway, it spins at less than 2000 rpm at 75mph. Super tall overdrive gearing.

Having said that, still a damn sexy and power dense engine.

The SBC is probably one of the best engine series ever. They're easy to maintain, cheap to make powerful, and damn they sound good with a nice set of pipes. I really need to get an audio recording of my dad's truck now that it's up and running. Sounds amazing.

That's what I thought.

I was just going to say that it's a shame that GM doesn't produce a small 3-cylinder like Ford's ecoboost, but apparently they do: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GM_Small_…

Kinja'd!!! Axial > BaconSandwich is tasty.
05/03/2014 at 23:03

Kinja'd!!!0

Eh, three cylinders is nothing to write home about. Sure you make some improvements by reducing the number of moving parts, but the real benefits of the three cylinder come from its smaller displacement. I've seen examples of four cylinders with smaller displacement than certain three cylinders putting up better numbers performance-wise for negligible change in fuel economy.

Also, in a car with a very small frontal area. Which, to be honest, is helped by the low profile of the engine.
